MSTN Genotypes In Thoroughbred Horses Influence Skeletal Muscle Gene Expression And Racetrack Performance: This study demonstrates that myostatin may have multiple functions at different stages of development. Muscle biopsies were taken from yearling Thoroughbreds prior to the initiation of training and then following a 10-month period of training. Myostatin mRNA levels were highest in C:C horses initially, but decreased dramatically following training. It is likely that the reduction in myostatin gene expression during the course of training has a direct impact on muscle growth and development in Thoroughbred skeletal muscle.
